Let's Get Real

45

On Let’s Get Real Chef Erica Wides walks you down the aisles of the surreal world of food, serving up a heaping dose of reality by separating the food from the foodiness so you can forage, hunt, gather, trap and fish for real food anywhere, even in a foodiness-filled mega market. Incisive, pragmatic, sarcastic, and an unrepentant know-it-all when it comes to anything food, on Let’s Get Real Chef Erica Wides does the job for you of sifting out everything that’s fake in the world of food – from “foodiness” marketing and cooking show shams to “health-halo green-washing” and annoying whole-food righteousness – so you never unknowingly chow down on carpeting again.

    Love it
Here’s what’s so great about “Let’s Get Real” - every episode is a reminder that just because a packaged food says “healthy” and “nutritious” on its packaging, it ain’t necessarily so. Erica won’t let us forget that marketing is big business for the food industry. I love listening to her fact-based, passionate diatribes. She’s interesting and informative but also hilarious. The stories about her growing-up years are pure gold. This podcast has made me a smarter consumer and a healthier person. Come to Portland, Erica, and I’ll make you some lentil soup! :-)

    Wow—Erica taking on foodiness
This show cracks me up every week—It’s like a food-themed comedy hour that confirms all my suspicions about big food—watch your back people—birthday cake flavored vodka is a sign!!

    Entitled Whining
Too bad, I wanted to like this. Too much ranting about 'the wrong sort' of food (and people?) and little to no useful information in recent episodes. If you are going to rail against bad food, and I am all for that, please balance with something positive to say.

Finally a funny [and fun] chef who also knows something
Saw Erica’s visiting over at Gardenfork.TV making gravy with Eric. FINALLY I understand both the principles and the practice of making a gravy. Funny, irreverent, fast-paced. Erica’s a great companion on commutes. Love her show.

used to be great, now just tiresomely self-righteous
Erica Wides was one of the podcaster who drew me into the world of food podcasts, especially on Heritage. She was funny, educated, generous with the tips and recipes. No longer. As a long-time vegan myself, I am happy to hear about the politics of food -- but the worst kind of ambassador for the pro-nutrition, anti-big corporate food -ists is a close-minded, slogan-reliant, ranter as Wides has become. She was alway a slightly smug know-it-all (just check out the impatience she provoked on the usually good-humored "Chopped" judges' panel), but her eccentrities were balanced by her curiousity and knowledge. Now she has become a bore, and an annoying one.

    Bring back the old show!
I started listening to Erica Wides when her podcast was called "Why we Cook", and it was fantastic. Lots of really quality food & cooking information. It made me want to get into the kitchen and cook. I went into the archives and listened to every single episode & would like to listen to them all again. The new show - "Let's Get Real", not so great. It's more about politics, random personal stories & trying to sell her show to get famous than actual food. And really nothing to do with cooking. I miss the old show, and I've finally unsubscribed from this podcast.

    LOVE it...
...it's funny and very frank...no bs. Most importantly though it is enlightening and informing.

Bring back the old show Erica!
I really liked Erica Wides old show, but Let's Get Real is just the same thing over and over with a different food backdrop. Erica Wides has a lot of cooking knowledge and it was great getting her political ideas interspersed within a lot of information about cooking. Now it just seems all political and no cooking. I sorely miss the old show and have a hard time listening to this. It tends to get boring.

So liberal it makes me nuts, but such a great speaker and always great topics I look forward to each week. Keep up the great work

    Great show
I learn a lot from listen to Erica great show. If you care about food this show is a must.

    Better to keep on topic
Takes a great topic and sullies it with politics. Erica should rename her podcast to "Sprouting my Bull." The topics are worth discussing, her political viewpoint - not.

    A very nice show
I love this show. As a cilinury student, this is really helpful and fun as well. Not to mention that the voice of the host is really attractive.

    Thoughtful
I learned about Chef Erica on Garden Fork. I thought I would just try her podcast and have since become addicted. I have a long commute and enjoy listening to her episodes. I wish I lived in NYC, so that I could enroll in her classes. Her students are very blessed. Keep up the good work.

    Love it!
After listening to my last two podcast episodes of my two favorite food realted shows (KCRW Good food and NPR food podcast), I was hungry for more. I happened upon Chef Erica's show and was hooked. I can relate to many of the topics and conversation in the show because I am also a CA instructor. It is refreshing to hear similar points of view and opinions. It is also nice to know that I am not the only one who cooks on my day off out of curiosity and dare I say it.....fun. Thank you Chef Erica for your incite and time you spend with your listening audience. Your students are lucky to have such an intelligent and passionate instructor. Kudos to your show. Keep up the good work. Thanks once again.

    What Fun
What I like about Erica is that she is herself. No food hype or trying to be a radio personality, AND she really knows what she is talking about ( unlike me ) because she is a real-world chef and there is always a storyline to each show. Thx. Eric of GardenFork.TV & GardenFork Radio

    Fantastic!
I stopped by Roberta's in Brooklyn to find out who had built out the two shipping containers behind the bar into an awesome tiny structure only to find out it was the radio station for the Heritage Radio Network. I went online to find out more about them and came across this show (they have other great food-related shows as well). The show is a great way to get more connected to your food and how to cook it. Erica mixes just the right amount of food history, trivia and food science together to make the show interesting, along with tips on cooking and how and why different foods are used. Definitely worth 5 stars.
