    Miss this
Miss you guys, your fabulous knowledge and funny stories! This will always be my fave opera podcast.

    Idel chatter?
I hear some people exchanging Canadian jokes and finally got exasperated. It looked as if there might not be actually music included. I listened to “rage arias” and it took forever to get to the point.

Because not all of us have friends who want to talk Opera all day
    It’s silly and fun!

    Fun with opera
Discovered OAD during early months of pandemic. I’m a fan of opera and know most of these well. Still, your informal presentations are a lot of fun and I’ve discovered things I never knew. Send more.

    My favorite podcast! Hands down.

    Yay season 5!
I love this podcast and am so happy that new episodes are on their way. I have had so many laugh-out-loud moments listening to this podcast- some standouts were The Fiery Angel, Pelléas et Mélisande, Werther and the Ring Cycle. If you read this Elspeth, Naomi and Kyle- PLEASE do an episode about Anna Russell- especially her take on the Ring Cycle...I think her humor is very much in harmony with the spirit of this podcast. Thanks so much for the great content! Search Resul

    Coronatide Companions
I feel like I’ve become friends with the Opera After Dark gang, as I’ve listened to most of episodes since the COVID shutdown started in March. Thanks for making me laugh, and for teaching me about the wild and crazy world of opera.

    Great Podcast!
I just discovered this podcast and I am really enjoying the episodes. My only gripe is with Kyle. Sorry but he’s a little annoying.

    Favorite podcast!
There’s nothing better than listening to three people who love opera as much as you (especially when you’re not surrounded by opera lovers in your day to day life). Elspeth and Naomi are very informed (and Kyle has great reactions), and while yes, they do pronounce things wrong sometimes, that’s not the point. I loved being able to learn new things- even about operas I thought I knew!- and binged the whole podcast during quarantine.

    Too much profanity
Some interesting information, but I couldn’t get past the excessive swearing of the commentators and had to stop listening to several episodes.

    Love these guys!
In one episode Kyle nicely says we can be your friends who like opera, that is what this podcast is in a nutshell. Every episode is a riot. It is also like Drunk History for opera. I never feel like they’re talking down to someone who doesn’t know about opera or music in general:

    Best Opera Podcast
This is hands down the best opera podcast out there. Lots of awesome insights, lesser known historical facts, and I love that the hosts are very knowledgeable and they know what they’re talking about. Lots of fun discussions and laughter, too. Keep up the great job!

    The podcast I’ve always wanted!
Just discovered this podcast and its one of my new favorites! Really good insights and hilarious discussion of the lesser known and crazier parts of classical music history. Looking forward to binging my way through all the episodes!

    Disappointed....
I love opera and was thrilled to find the podcast, but then I tried to listen. Unfortunately for me, could not get past six minutes of any segment because of all the presenters’ asides, joking, and self-attention. E. G. Is Debussy really entirely defined by his beard in one photo and by tragic love life? How about a nuanced awareness of the suffering? Do we need a presenter’s weak solo re-performance of the chorus of Il Trovatore? etc. How do these approaches advance our appreciation of the opera? I don't need a po-faced university-style lecture, and I appreciate humor, but what I’ve heard is jarring. How about some attention to musicology, to sociology-historical context, and an attempt to apply named standards to the analysis in the podcast? Check our the BBC.

Love the podcast, and their personalities!

    I love these three
They are so lovely and funny and I love their rapport.

    Diction
I like that this podcast has members who are trying to reach out to a younger generation. I believe that in this effort, this group of people has let go their accuracy in pronunciation and diction of these works, composers and vocalists. It is very important to know the correct pronunciation of these artists and compositions because they deserve that kind of respect. Please encourage the knowledge of opera and classical music with correct and accurate diction.

Can you guys make this available to listen in China? It’s not even the great firewall issue

    Handel and Salome
The hosts are not very knowledgeable and they never actually play any music.

    Good but the sound...
Y’all are great. I thoroughly enjoy the content and banter. BUT holy cow y’all, please work on the balance on your microphones! Half the time I can’t hear one person, so I turn it up, then someone else comes on and blows my speakers and ears out. Kyle typically always has it right; if everyone spoke as close and consistently into the mic as Kyle I’m almost sure the problem would be fixed! It’s hard to tune in otherwise, and I really want to!

So much fun and so informative
I stumbled across this podcast while doing some academic research on a recent obsession of mine, the stories of E. T. A. Hoffmann. The discussion of Offenbach's opera was so much fun and so informative that I'm sticking around for more. The episode on synesthesia is absolutely fascinating. And I love the informality and spirit of fun in the discussions.

    Highly enjoyed Das Rheingold
Very very funny Ring cycle episode- can’t wait to hear more!

    Still fresh and fun.
The tipsy trio continue to entertain and instruct. They keep finding esoteric topics and salacious details to expound on and I find it truly enjoyable to listen to them.

    Best Opera Podcast
As a fellow opera buff/nerd and wine lover this podcast is amazing! As down to earth as it is, even if you don’t know opera, this is a fun way to get to know it. My particular favorite is the fantasy casting! I just wish I lived in NY so I could be part of this show. I highly recommend listening to these amazing funny people. I can’t wait for them to do the Ring Cycle, because I know they All love Wagner ( wink wink )
  • Katester!
    Fun and contemporary opera podcast
I love the Met Guild podcast but I’ve been waiting for something like for a long time! It’s really fun to listen to and enjoyable to hear more subjective opinions on composers and works. My favorite so far is the Mozart Scatalogical episode but all of them are fun. If you are a fan of the Met Guild one it’s an added dimension of fun to hear Naomi be more informal and casual. I hope you guys do an Opera After Dark live episode sometime, I would definitely go! One small side note — they play excerpts from operas but don’t mention the recording (I.e. who the artists are). I am not sure why this is, and it would be interesting to know. I think it might be bc if you say you have to pay for rights? Anyway, it’s a small inconvenience bc I want to Shazam but can’t do it simultaneously on my phone. I highly recommend this to opera aficionados and especially to newcomers — it has a fun (and informative!) vibe that I think is very approachable. Thank you so much Elspeth, Kyle and Naomi for doing this! I really enjoy it <3

    Love it!
Informative, down to earth, and fun. Wish they would credit the recordings they play. Either in the written synopsis or the audio recording. Keep up the good work though!

    Entertaining and informative
Being an opera lover since a few years already, I was surprised by the lack of good opera related podcast. Luckily I found this one! It’s definitely targeted to the younger crowd which makes it fresh and not stuffy. I like their lightheartedness and use of simple language. This kind of podcast is great for young people interested in this art form. Thumbs up!!!

    🤦🏻‍♂️
Sassy but very dumb Kyle. Stop interrupting the smart ladies around you for idiotic comments. Trying to make something accessible doesn’t have to mean dumbing it down (and yes you should know who/what Verlaine, Rimbaud and Gamelan music is if you pretend to run a music/cultural podcast). As Assimov said “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge”. Perfect illustration.

I passed a final because of this podcast
I started listening to this just because I loved it so much, but the Bluebeard’s castle episode was so informative that I used it to y’all at length about Bela Bartok in my 20th century music final. Thanks guys!!!!

    lighter than air
If you want to listen to three people laugh for a long period of time, this is the podcast for you. If you want to hear about opera, there are better choices.

Binge listening to my favorite podcast
Naomi, Elspeth, and Kyle, I know you now. Since I’ve been listening I am better informed about the important composers and periods in music history. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm, research, and humor. You have me laughing out loud. Please keep up the fun, my friends.

    New discovery
I have always enjoyed the podcasts from the Met Opera, particularly those by Naomi B. The season is over so I was looking for something to take its place and discovered Opera After Dark. I love it! I started with a recent episode and have gone back to 2016 to get the whole series. Filled with amusing anecdotes, the podcast is very entertaining. I enjoy the give and take among the participants, the irreverent jokes and even the wine reviews. The selections and their appropriateness for the discussion topic always brings a smile to my face. I’m looking forward to it’s resumption in the fall.

    AMAZING podcast!
About a year ago I changed jobs and my commute went from 15 minutes to an hour- opera after dark has been my solution. Every time it pops up in my podcast queue I smile. Opera After Dark is the perfect combination of educated, intellectual commentary and fun. It’s interesting for the educated listener, but also very accessible. If you love opera- this is for you! You will learn amazing histories and stories that are well- researched, thoughtful and VERY entertaining. I NEVER write reviews (this may literally be my first one) but I want to encourage anyone who loves opera to give this a listen. (Try the Black Mozart episode one for size- it’s AMAZING!) Bravi tutti- thank you for all the work you do to put this together!

Love, love, love Opera After Dark!!

    Love love love!
I absolutely ADORE this podcast. As an opera singer and opera lover this podcast could not be more up my alley. The hosts are wonderful, the topics are insightful and/or hilarious, and I'm dreading the nearing day when I catch up on all of the published episodes and have to wait between installments. Keep up the wonderful work!

    Hilarious and informative
If you want to learn about fascinating and incredibly bizarre opera trivia, and get handy skims of opera plots and histories with helpful audio clips, this podcast is for you. Relating to the millennial generation will definitely help. I'm an avid follower of more high-brow / prim classical music podcasts, but I never knew I was really missing something that felt like hanging out with other opera nerds, and that's exactly what this is. PLEASE put up some OAD merch online! I will buy your t-shirt!

    Awful
Considering how good the other podcast that Naomi is on I was expecting great things. This is a horrible disappointment with juvenile humor, information that is guessed at rather than having been researched ahead of time, and way too much about their drinking.
  • @PaulBurkett1
    Really Great and Fun
The trio give us great conversation about the history and personalities that make opera great. Keep up the good work!
  • pnako
    This is amazing!
Ok, so ever since I found this podcast I have absolutely loved it! It is hilarious, irreverent, and amazingly humorous! I have listened to all of the episodes so far and nothing, I mean absolutely nothing, tops the Mozart scatology episode. I foolishly listened to this episode while at work and found myself laughing out loud like a crazy person at my desk. Well because of this, I had to tell the guy I share an office with why I was laughing and found it a bit embarrasing. Even so, it was totally worth the embarrasment because that episode is just the best! Kyle's reactions are some of the funniest moments so far in the podcast.

I love listening to you guys laugh it up while talking about opera. My wife and I often attend the Met Opera Guild talks and while those offer a traditional account of the people and events in opera, your O.A.D. stories bravely peek behind the curtain to the real people and their lives. I especially loved the story of the dudelsack as my Croatian friend owns one and it often comes out late in the evening after one adult beverage too many. Keep up the great work and we will keep listening.

    This is great!
I love listening to Kyle, Naomi, and Elspeth talking about all of these operas! I learn new trivia topics about operas and composers. It's a super fun way to learn about the art form I love! Keep it up, guys!
