Martii9820I REALLY want to like this, but…The interviews are great and the topics are awesome but I can’t get past the awkward artificial “call and response” style of the discussions. I find myself cringing waiting for the next interruption to the point I’m not even able to follow the story. Is this supposed to be artistic? Or an attempt to keep it from sounding like a monologue? Why can’t the two hosts just share facts? It sounds like the responses are literally edited in. Nobody has a conversation like this.

The Usher 2016Voluminous ads/commercialsMost content enjoyable, although FKTs, Barley Marathon, elite performers seem over-represented.

PotatoshellLiving vicariously through this podInstantly became one of my favorite podcasts! Everybody truly has a unique story to tell. Its inspiring listening to all the different adventures out there, making it fun to binge while adding places to my bucket list, especially while I am stuck at my boring government job, thanks Doc!

Attila722Great podcastNice to find a podcast that the host and guest stay on topic and don’t joke and grab@!! thru the entire podcast talking over each other and/or laughing at their own jokes. Refreshing to find.

Herbie from VAStriving for Average with LegendGreat episode. Best laugh in a few days.and good info in light hearted manner

Every nickname is already takeMehI’d love to learn about the guests but the host is a bad interviewer. The “segments” and “bits” are not useful or entertaining. It’s like he’s pretending to be what he thinks a radio host is instead of just talking to his guests and being curious about their lives.
-
bundy71So happy I found this podcast!I came late to the JFM/Hiker Trash podcast party. Doc is a great host, and the guests are amazing. I love hearing the stories of all their adventures. Great show!
-

na_210Lovin’ it in the dirty southwest. One reason I’ve really love listening is because I love being transported to the High Sierra, or maybe the Wind River Range or the Utah desert, or some Appalachian trail town. I love hearing what hikers think of NM. Keep it up, Doc!

-
allnameswereslreadychosenGreat show!Love the show. Doc does a wonderful job of asking questions and sharing information. The guests on this show are awesome with lots of great stories. Bonus points for Apple fritters being the only acceptable choice for a doughnut.
-
Budgirigar loveGreat showDoc’s interview style with the hiking community is both entertaining and informative. Good variety of hikers from Legend to Gingerballs are interviewed, so this podcast is quite enlightening and I look forward to his twice a week podcasts.

matt1075Good podcastGood job , finally someone that lets the guests speak and tell their stories . No fluff no filler like a lot of other podcasts .
-
Yeah45Entertaining and informativeDoc has a honed his skills as an interviewer over the last couple of years and assembled a great backlog of podcasts. I’ve learned a lot about trails to hike, books to read, videos to watch, equipment and pro tips. The guests are mostly excellent and accomplished. Its often funny but always educational and Docs enthusiasm for the subject shines through. A great pod to listen to in the gym or in the car on the way to a trail.
-
jpharkLove your podcasts but…could not get past the first 5 min of the Rue McKenrick interview. i just could not get past Rue being so evasive on the first question “what’s your trail name”. he’s the first person i have listened to that could not give a straight answer to this simple question. needless to say i’m not wasting my time with Rue.
-
optoccGreat storiesLove this pod, enjoy how the interviews go into more of the persons background and personal story and how it relates to their hikes. The tips and tricks throughout are my favorite parts.
-
Wounded Eagle -Love This PodThe JFM pod is always entertaining and a great listen. Doc has a way of drawing out a good story and has interesting guests from the hiking world. As a JMT hiker, I’ve found the pod motivating, informative, funny and helpful. It keeps my connection to the trail when I can’t be there. He has a wide variety of guests to keep it interesting. I like the “pro tip of the week” segment as well as “must bring” gear segment. Keep it up Doc.
-
G Man 667Captivating!I ran across this podcast researching the John Muir Trail and am so glad I did! Doc’s voice and his ability to have his guests tell their story keep me listening earnestly, as if we were close friends sitting around a campfire. As a fellow So Cal native, I can relate closely to Doc’s experiences throughout the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountain ranges.
-
eurotrash v2Always entertainingThe host - Doc - lets the guest tell their own story in their own words. It’s frequently funny and always entertaining.
-
amberdesiraeIncredible, informative, hilariousHey, Amber from Indiana here. I’ve recently stumbled onto this podcast and I’m so glad I did. I’m fairly new to the backpacking world and I have found this podcast to be not only so informative, but incredibly relatable. I love the banter between Doc and all of the guests, the pro tip, the media recommendations. Coming from a flat state, I enjoy hearing about all of the beauty out west that I hope to one day be able to explore and enjoy. This podcast has gotten me through some pretty tough days! Listen to it every day at work. 5 stars doesn’t do it justice. Thank you Doc!
-
joshuahankAwesomeSuch a great pod for Adventure enthusiasts. Fantastic range of guests from your average hiker to triple crowners and much more. I always have a few episodes download before I head out to the wilderness.
-
Professional and fun!Love this podcast!Want to listen to great adventures? You found the right podcast. Whether you are a newbie or an old grizzled veteran that hikes mostly off trail like me, you will love docs interviews and stories!

JohnneeBullNeed to get past the podcast nameThere is joy to be found in the content. The guests are those most would find enjoyable. The host does their job well, and the show moves along. A point was docked for the name. Much has recently been written about Muir’s racism and ties to eugenics. While his accomplishments in preserving wild places are laudable the means used to do so are not. Nor are the reasons. The indigenous peoples from which the national parks and forests were stolen to “preserve” would very likely like to have them back.
-
Gilliganmc01Awesome for HikingLove it!! Great structure, funny and incredible to listen too..
-
cody_harlow1Awesome podcastThis is probably my favorite backpacking podcast. The guests are always great and really good telling their stories. Always look forward to the next podcast.

Excel on the trailLike a great chat by the campfireBringing all the magic of a good backcountry chat by the campfire but without the bugs, smoke, cold, and soreness. Love the diversity of experiences and perspectives from famous triple crowners to six year old Superheros.
-
DbagmcsnagThe best trail podcast!!!Doc does an amazing job interviewing his guests in a way that flows nicely, and his guests are always very interesting. It’s everything from thru hiking, rock climbing to trail running. Seriously the best pod out there for any trail or mountain enthusiasts. — Joey @trailjunction

@aguaboitaGreat podcastI’ve been a regular listener since I first discovers the podcast a few months agoI love it. As a 3x JMT alumni I love how the pod keeps me feeling connected to the trail. I listen to a ton of podcasts in the outdoor space and Doc’s interview skills are second to none. Great guests, awesome podcast.
-
Andrea the Pinterest addictGreat podcast for adventure lovers.I am not the most adventurous person but I love hearing about other’s adventures so this podcast is great. What started as a podcast about personal adventures on the John Muir Trail has grown into advice, pack shake-downs and, more recently, interviewing a wide range of adventure seekers. Doc does a great job with interviewing and making his guests feel at ease. He asks great probing questions and the conversations flow very comfortably. I really enjoy all of the new segments that have been added too...the top five, must have gear, and adventure book/media recommendations. And...I like when Doc asks his guests “do you know what time it is” because they don’t know but I do. 😁 I’m always sad when an episode ends but I know there is another one coming up so the adventure will continue. Definitely a podcast worth subscribing to.

PaulieGSIt’s Freakin’ Awesome.Due to my longing to be in the Sierras at any given time, I discovered the JFM podcast. The trail descriptions of the JMT and the numerous guests Doc has interviewed has made an interesting pod. It is very entertaining and can whisk you away on a long drive...making that long drive not so long. The topics/guests not only cover backpacking, but also endurance racing. The pod is starting to format nicely as Doc and the guests are all becoming very comfortable with the interviews. It is my #1 listened to pod on Spotify. I encourage you to listen to it as well. Happy trails.

Ls666Making me miss the trails even moreWell I’ve been listening to this pod cast for a few months now, I really liked the last episode with Jen I’ve done angels landing and the narrows. I live in Fresno so I’ve hiked a lot in Yosemite and the the dinkey wilderness. I also have done mt Whitney in 1 day so hearing the last episode brought back memories. What originally got me hooked to this podcast was the stories from the first few episodes with buddy, chopper, and jukebox. I’ve been planning a lot of trips because of this pod, every time I hear of a new hike I write it down in my to do hiking note book. I was supposed to do half the jmt this year but COVID messed that up. At least I can listen to podcasts like this one and let my imagination run free with the stories you and your guests tell, thank you.
-
topher7_2Love itI love this Pod, really gets me in the mood to get some trail miles in. A must listen for any hiker or backpacker
-
Henry_SIWPHilarious and inspirational!I started listening to Doc and the gang at the beginning of the year and immediately connected with their stories and sense of humor. I also love the fun facts that Doc shares with his listeners. If you’re into hiking and the outdoors, whether you’re advanced or intermediate/beginner (like myself, I definitely recommend the JFM podcast, a great listen, especially when you’re on the trails!
