Candlelit Tales Irish Mythology Podcast

22

We are a group of storytellers, performers, and musicians. We tell Irish myths to a live audience with live music.Candlelit Tales was founded by brother-sister storytelling duo Aron and Sorcha Hegarty. Driven by a passion for Irish mythology, we started retelling the stories to a near-empty room upstairs in a Dublin pub one rainy evening in November. The next week, the room was a lot less empty, and we were joined by musician Ru O’Sé. By the fourth week, the room was full, and so was the hall outside. We realised that when we share our passion, it becomes contagious. And we’ve been telling stories and playing music from that day to this. Since then, over the past five years of telling stories in the capital of this nation of storytellers, we have developed and refined our uniquely expressive, naturalistic and modern style. Live music is the heartbeat of all our performances, and a live original music score composed by a team of talented musicians drives the rhythm of the stories

    Love love love
I love listening to these stories! I listen at work, I listen as I’m going to sleep and listen over and over. The stories themselves are great and the commentary helps me remember how to put them together is so wonderfully educational. So glad I found Sorcha and Aron!

As close to perfection as it gets, imo
Sorcha and Aron have made a high-quality podcast. They’re incredibly skilled story-tellers with lovely voices, each. Irish myths are fascinating in and of themselves, but I enjoy the way they delve into perspectives from individual characters, not afraid even to dig into the motivations of antagonists that most might shy away from. I’m hooked!

I love the reading style of both siblings and their discussions afterward. This podcast is making my grandma happy, who always wanted me to learn more about Irish culture!

Best storytelling/myth podcast I’ve found so far
I’ve always been a lover of myth, legend, and folk stories and I’ve tried lots of podcasts that have been good but not quite what I was looking for. THIS is what I was looking for. I love the cadences of the storytelling, the mix of stories, the feeling of sitting around the fireside hearing the storytellers and then the freeform discussion that grows from the story. Keep up the great work and I hope to be enjoying this podcast for a long time to come.

    Great fun.
I’ve been enjoying this show for months, but today especially it was a gift, as I’m sick and stuck at home, and the discussion of the recent Classics series made me laugh so hard I coughed. I love the retellings, and the insights into them, and the chance to learn more about these stories. Thanks!

    Truly delightful
I’m so grateful I stumbled upon this podcast. I’ve just started listening, I think I’m up to episode 20, and I can’t stop. The whole concept and format of it is so unique and engaging. The storytelling makes me feel like a kid in front of the fire in wintertime and the hosts’ educated and thoughtful conversations add so much depth. I retold one of the myths to my partner recently and I couldn’t believe how well I remembered the names and places and events. I think it’s a credit to the hosts talent (and humor) that these stories take root so deeply, and ask to be retold. As an American with Irish ancestry, I’m so grateful to have this little connection to my roots…

    Unbelievable
This is hands down my favourite Podcast. If I could listen to it 24/7 I probably would. As a child I was always drawn to these stories in school, and now hearing them with music and other dramatic elements is a shear delight.

    Wonderful Storytelling
Irish Mythology, foundational as it is to an entire era of Fantasy Fiction, is such an oft overlooked body of work, and fascinating in its complex themes. The mythology itself being an amalgamation of Celtic Oral tradition, and Christian Biblical tradition (sometimes shoehorned in as monks worked to Christianize Ireland’s rich pagan culture), it begs the interesting question to the modern listener: “What is more authentically Irish? To attempt to weed out the Christian influence and restore the Celtic purity? Or to accept the melding as an accurate description of a people that is both unique in its pre Christian heritage and yet, in history, devoted to the Catholic Church in a way that other cultures were not? Sorcha abd Aron Hegarty do an amazing job of presenting these stories and plumbing the depths of what they can mean to us still today. They do so in a medium of oral performance, (backed by they’re wonderful musical accompanists) that is truly how these stories were meant to be told: with passion and emotion and lilt that cannot be achieved by the written word. You will be transported to the mythic land of Ireland in a way you never knew before, and you’ll come back again, searching for that mist in the wilderness, through which you might step through to an other world…

    Brilliant
A great evening wind down podcast. I’ve spent many a fantastic evening listening to Candlelit Tales while creating art to settle my mind. I recommend a listen if you enjoy getting lost in the magic of Irish mythology.
