Circling the Drain

29

A podcast about the period BEFORE you stop getting your period. The concept of a woman "circling the drain" conjures up negative imagery for some, but the origin of this as the name of the podcast has a story. A friend, in her 30's at the time, was listing her ailments to a male physician who clearly had a terrible bedside manner, because he responded to her complaints by shrugging his shoulders in a dismissive fashion and saying something like, "I don't know what to tell you. From now on, you're basically just circling the drain!" Co-hosts Ellie and Julia have been laughing at the audacity of this tone-deaf interaction ever since, and when they decided to start this podcast about the plight of the aging woman, they chose to reclaim and repurpose the phrase in the spirit of humor. Every human on the planet is circling the drain from the moment we are born. The question is, how slowly and gracefully can we spiral? And can we minimize the discomfort while we whirl? Perimenopausal co-hosts Ellie and Julia take a deep dive into the sometimes embarrassing, often hilarious, and always bewildering issues of the hormonal changes that take place in midlife. Through honest accounts, thoughtful interviews, and group panel discussions, their mission is to make you chuckle, make you nod your head in recognition, and hopefully make some scientific progress.

    Hilarious, informative
Turn to them as you would to your best friends, and laugh together at the inevitable changes that come along with peri and menopause. It’s easy to get into a tizzy about how our bodies change during perimenopause and menopause — but Julia and Ellie make it better! They emphatically validate the challenges and then get you laughing about it. As a guest on on their show, I felt this completely! I’m a big fan! I also have a hand fan with me at all times. Because hot flashes.

    Interesting, informative, and—best of all—entertaining
As someone who is always on the lookout for thought-provoking content, I cannot recommend this podcast enough. Ellie and Julie's candid conversations about women's health issues are incredibly necessary, as they tackle topics that are often swept under the rug or ignored altogether. Through their discussions, they normalize conversations around premenopause, menopause, and other taboo topics, making listeners and panelists feel comfortable engaging in a dialogue that helps reduce stigma and increase awareness. The dynamic duo's humor also made the podcast enjoyable, and I found myself laughing along with them as they shared their witty observations on life experiences. Overall, I cannot recommend this podcast enough. It provides a refreshing perspective on topics that are rarely discussed with such openness. Kudos to Ellie and Julie for creating such an informative and entertaining show. Highly recommend!

This was such an incredible conversation to have with Ellie and Julia. I love listening and I loved taking part in this important discussion and deep dive into the issues of midlife, aging and the things that come with it! The best
Best podcast I’ve ever been lucky enough to stumble across. Perimenopause is no joke and there is virtually no discussion, treatment or even acknowledgement of it in medical or social circles. This podcast is brilliant, informative, hilarious, validating, and makes me feel like I’m not crazy. I LOVE the openness with which these very kind, empathetic and funny women (and their guests) discuss “verboten” topics like orgasms, hemorrhoids, UTIs, reproductive care, libido, aging… I could go on and on. Listen!! You won’t regret it. It’s worth every minute of your time :)

    So informative and funny
I love these ladies so much. I have been so dismissed during my peri menopause journey. To have these ladies validate my feelings and give me great info has been so helpful. Also they are HYSTERICAL

Best Podcast—nobody talks about this stuff!
Loving this. They are discussing topics that aren’t raised anywhere else and it’s super down to earth, funny, engaging. I love it (and I don’t make time for a lot of podcasts).

Informative and funny, and such a necessary topic that so many are afraid to approach.

    This podcast is self-care!
These ladies who talk about perimenopause have become part of my self-care (as a 43 year-old woman). They have helped me to laugh as I learn about this phase of my life. The only bad thing is that they only release a new episode every other week, and I miss them so much between episodes!

    Glorious, Informative, Hilarious
God I love these ladies. Their approach to talking about our aging, changing bodies is a breath of fresh air. Ellie and Julia are smart, engaging, funny, curious, and they have excellent taste in guests. I love learning from them and commiserating with them as they spread awareness and normalcy about what millions of women go through every day. Brava, ladies. Brava!

    I’m not crazy.
This podcast makes me feel seen, like I’m in a special club of sweaty and sleep deprived broads who get it and can laugh about all the delicious food and alcohol we cannot consume because…perimenopausal hormones. These conversations are way overdue and super empowering to have. Thanks to Julia and Elly and their amazing guest line up, I don’t feel crazy. I feel understood and validated.

One of my top 5 podcasts
I lived down the street (or was it up, technically?) from Ellie for a few years when we were very young and if I had known that I’d be listening to her podcast decades later, I would have followed her when she moved. Just kidding! I’m so happy that social media introduced me to this podcast and has kept me laughing ever since. It’s great to know I’m in fabulous company when it comes to these issues.

    Tune in!
This podcast is reliably endearing and enlightening! Ellie and Julia, it is a pleasure to listen to you and your guests normalize and demystify the curiosities of peri menopause. It must be so much work to pull together such a wide range of experts and information but you do it with grace and humor. Quite a public service you’ve created! Thank you— you’re crushing it!

    Speaking my language- FINALLY
For YEARS, I have felt like I was speaking a foreign language to anyone who crossed my path- I had so many complaints both physical and mental. Doctors, friends, my spouse, even my kids- no one was free from hearing my ailments, yet I felt very alone. What Ellie and Julia are doing with this podcast gave me a community, language to use when talking to my friends, who, shock, were also dealing with the SAME random, weird, peri menopausal coaster of ups and downs. I look so forward to hearing more affirmation, reassurance and education each week and have happily recommended CTD to friends. Thank You!!!!

    Love this podcast!
As we experience the symptoms of peri menopause, it sometimes feels like our bodies are failing us. Ellie and Julia are changing that notion using humor and information designed to teach us how to flourish as a woman in midlife. I highly recommend this podcast!

    Best podcast!
I laughed, I cried, I peed my pants!! Did I do this all bc I’m in perimenopause, or because I was listening to this hilarious yet informative podcast? Well… maybe it was both!! Seriously… this stuff is important, and the hosts and guests do a great job of validating what women go through using humor, honesty, facts, and experiences. A must listen!

    Needed Conversations!
I love how honest & funny Ellie & Julia. I think all women should listen so they know what’s happening in their bodies and men should listen so they can understand what’s happening in said women’s bodies - it will serve everyone! Love these ladies!

Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman
Cis male of a certain age here. Listen up bruhs, put down the Old School DVD and subscribe to this podcast! The two hosts explore a world that you are blissfully unaware of. But don’t be afraid! Shocking, funny, and a little smelly, Julia and Ellie will be your guide. Armed with what you learn, you’ll be better equipped to guide your partner through this point in their life. Just don’t try to have sex with her! Have you learned nothing??

    Frank & funny
Looking for a no holds barred discussion about a women's health issue that no one seems to talk about? If so, join the hosts to explore their uncharted paths into perimenopause! They grapple with ineffective doctors and the frustration that comes from the unknown, understudied “lady problems”. Full of feelings and rage, tell everyone you know or those that need to know.

    I’m a man married to a menopauser
This is great and informative and delivered in such a humorous way. I want to be supportive of my wife and what she is going through on a daily basis. These ladies are rightfully unashamed of saying things that have long been seen as taboo. I wish I could give it another star.

    Hosts create amazing chemistry
While I am not the intended audience for this podcast, the hosts are so engaging and entertaining that I want to listen every week. Also, the information and opinions expressed are important for men to know! Worth the subscribe!

My Vagina & Uterus appreciate this podcast…
It’s good to know I’m not alone navigating the world of peri-menopause and menopause…because let’s face it, no one taught us about the ‘reverse puberty’ as I call it. Which is infuriating. Kudos to these two for talking about all the hard things. All the weird things. All the uncomfortable things. Half of the battle is knowing you are NOT know alone! How is it I have zits AND wrinkles at the same time? IDFK, but some lady out there is having the same internal dialogue as me…I just know it! Thank you for advocating for our underserved and dismissed population of vaginas. We thank you from the bottom of our labia 💕
  • Artfuleck
    No Vagina. No problem.
You don’t have to have a vagina to enjoy this podcast. Love these entertaining gals!
  • joyfulfitnessct
Fun hosts and we definitely need this info!
This feels unedited in such a great way! I’m looking forward to more episodes. Things made me chuckle, I learned things, I was even surprised a few times. There is not enough info out on this subject and I hope you ladies dominate the space for it!
