Games #36

A Call of Cthulhu actual play podcast.Dice-driven cosmic horrors supplied by Dominic Allen, Joseph Chance, Danann McAleer and guests.---The Apocalypse Players is an actual play (or live play) TTRPG podcast focused on horror tabletop roleplaying games. Think Dimension 20 or Critical Role, but fewer dragons, more eldritch horrors, and more British actors taking their roleplaying very seriously (most of the time). We primarily play the Chaosium RPG Call of Cthulhu, but have also been known to dabble with other systems, most of which can be found on our Patreon: www.patreon.com/apocalypseplayersWe now have a free Discord server where you can come and worship at the altar of the Apocalypse, play Call of Cthulhu online, and meet like-minded cultists who will be only to eager to welcome you into the fold. New sacrifices oops we mean players are always welcome. Join here: discord.com/invite/kRQ62t6SjH

Thrills, Chills, and Laughs - An Absolute Delight
The Apocalypse Players podcast delivers what I imagine those lucky listeners of yesteryear got to experience hearing Orson Welles perform War of the Worlds - passion, glee, ambience, mood, mischief, mayhem, and a chance to believe in the unbelievable, to be frightened by the impossible, and play along with every pull of the thread and push of the roll. Vivid storytelling, engaging characters brought to life by skilled improvisers, and top-notch sound design and editing. And the music - hearing the intro kick in provides the same rush as the opening themes to Game of Thrones or Mad Men or Sherlock. A wonderful treat and a lovely way to spend an hour. Can’t wait for more.

    Fantastic
I just discovered The Apocalypse Players in December and am now fully caught up! I’m happy I listened from the beginning, because there are small references to previous episodes scattered throughout. Each scenario has been a delight to listen to, but I especially love the original scenarios written by the players. Everyone is excellent, whether playing the role of keeper or investigator, and the guest stars are always a real treat. Now that I’m all caught up, I’ll have to check out the Patreon content!

Best Call of Cthulhu and horror role playing
This is one of the best podcasts of actual plays of Call of Cthulhu. The actors are amazing and have a great sense of humor sprinkled throughout. Perfect blend of horror and humor! These are the best.

    Too good to miss
Fast becoming my favorite actual play RPG pod. A rare bird in this genre, the Apocalypse Players are equally at home making me laugh out loud as they are at creating genuinely unsettling and dramatic existential horror. Bravo & More Please! P.S. Joining their Patreon is well worth the spend.

    Mesmerizing
A mesmerizing chimera, with the head of improv theater and the body of tabletop role playing. I’ve never been a fan of horror, but can’t stop listening to The Apocalypse Players.

    One of my absolute favorites
Thoughtful, playful, and horrific by turns, one of the best AP shows I’ve found. The Players run a mix of published scenarios and atmospheric, history-rich homebrew, and while they’re happy to let the silly moments come, they also dig in and explore the emotional reactions their characters have to the horror in a really compelling way. There’s a lot of depth to savor.

    Absolute thrilling and disturbing
This podcast exudes the madness in the method of Call of Cthulhu live play. I enjoy listening to it at work, or at home, and plays best in a dark room with a strong drink. Each time I find myself loving the characters, but still wishing for their grime demise. Love the fact they rotate keepers, it keeps the games interesting and removes any risk of going stale. Glad to be a Patreon member as well.

    Fascinating
A delight. A work of art. This show really makes you listen. That said, it has plenty of levity, mischief, and jokes. Every session immerses listeners in a world that feels different and with the back catalogue, there is something for everyone. Give it a go!

    Exciting, quality horror actually plays
Experienced players and performers come together to create outstanding actual plays of horror roleplaying game scenarios. Among the very best out there.

    Well done.
Just started listening to this podcast and even the first 6 episodes are well produced, with great content. Can’t wait to see where it goes from here.

    A Pinnacle
These folk embody not only a well produced and run podcast but also what every ttrpg player/gm wants to emulate imo

    My favorite TTRPG Actual Play
I love the Apocalypse Players. They are the absolute best of TTRPG actual play podcasts: clever editing, consistent uploads, a great back catalogue to listen through, and a seriously talented and charming group of players/keepers. What really stands out though is their skill as performers, the improve and commitment to collaborative story telling stands out; equal parts funny, atmospheric, and exciting. Can’t recommend highly enough.

    Great Chemistry
Like Pretending To Be People it’s clear these players are friends and really love getting into character and exploring weird worlds. I’ve binged their stuff recently and it’s great!

    Great, entertaining podcast!
I actually found this podcast through a No Rolls Barred episode on YT. It was the Call of Cthulhu 3 episode scenario. I’ve been listening since, it’s only been a couple of weeks but I’ve made it through 3 series/scenarios so far. Great work and I am really enjoying it. Keep it up!

This group is amazing and extremely engaging. I’ve been on a Cthulhu binge lately, and they are definitely top shelf. They truly commit to the game AND to their characters.
  • apparent_brain
    Ouch
It’s like watching Keystone Kops in slow motion. Assembling the most useless, unlikeable and verbose characters together to combat cosmic horrors… ouch.

    NRB Brought Me Here
Now I’m staying. Great podcast, super glad I found it.
  • JamzedJD
20 out of 20 Lester Goodmans Agree!
I haven’t read any Lovecraft, but I love this podcast. It’s the right level of suspense, comedy, and horror. I still find myself relistening to Saturnine Chalice because of the dark humor. Definitely Coen brothers material!

Hidden gem that deserves more love!
Found this through NRB and my obsession with it is threatening to overtake my love of everything on that channel! One of the absolute best actual play podcasts I’ve ever listened to; everyone is talented, well-prepared, funny and just massively entertaining. Much love to Dan, Danann, Dom, and Joseph! Keep up the great work, lads!
  • Opinion44
    Dom was right.
NRB fans turned Dominic Allen super fans, and will live on to see the Dominion reign supreme. The three parter, posted with Dom as the most extraordinary keeper of arcane law I have ever seen, was not enough to satisfy this new found hunger – we couldn’t run fast enough to the (perfectly well named) website to get more and have only been disappointed when Dom is not the storyteller. Even so, this is an incredible actual play podcast with a group wonderful routine and guest players and look forward to getting to know them better as we continue to listen on! Perfect for those searching for a myriad of mysteries made to please the curious, punish the clumsy, and poetically cultivate the imagination.

    Folk Horror Meets Cthulhu Mythos
This podcast consistently delivers original content that I would argue expands the genre of TTRPG narrative beyond the standards set by even the most classic scripted Call of Cthulhu modules. The production is outstanding and the classic education of the players shines through. I love feeling like I’m getting a serialized, weekly BBC show on my feed every Monday. 👍🏼👍🏼

    Roll San.
Pleasantly surprised by this podcast. Nice editing, good production, and a table of players that help to make it entertaining. The “Keeper” is very good at incorporating the rules of the game into the story , without slowing down the narrative. Well done , gentlemen - hope to hear many more episodes.
  • bradshga
great quality show with top notch role playing
love this show, with some of the best role playing ever!
  • GethAdmin
    Too good to pass up.
The cast are hilarious. The games have actual moments of “oh my f@$&ing God” with legit chills. It’s great work and I can’t wait for the next episode.
