Queen Havoc and Her Murder Cult

Cecilia Steyn has been called “the Charles Manson of South Africa.” The criminal mastermind helmed a quasi-Christian cult and convinced her followers to kill 11 innocent people, without spilling a drop of blood herself. Join host and filmmaker Kurt Kubicek as he travels to the mining town of Krugersdorp, SA to unravel this twisted history through exclusive interviews with the lead detectives, journalists who covered the case, and even the incarcerated murderers themselves.

    Strange Style of Storytelling
I’ll admit I didn’t listen to the whole thing. This is kind of one guy reading a story to you. They do have a few other people chiming in but for the most part the research and interviews are pretty light. There are a lot of episodes and I can’t see investing that much time given that I don’t like how this was done. There’s also an award-winning TV documentary so I think I’ll go there instead.

    Great story, poorly told
This was a wild, interesting story, but I really disliked the production, writing. Overdramatized writing and delivery. Poorly organized, making it hard to follow, introducing key details at weird times. I want to hear someone tell this story better.

    Low quality
Poorly structured, disorganized. Low journalistic quality. Melodramatic writing. There is so much high-quality true crime out there that poor work like this is unnecessary. Quit after the first episode.

    Thanks for fixing Ep 9!
This story is wild and twisted and complex! It’s got everything: murder, cults, manipulation, possibly corrupt cops, and more. I can’t believe they actually went to speak to the murderers / cult leader in prison?! The music and sound of it is perfectly eerie and intriguing, too. So sad for the victims and it must have been so scary for the people of Krugersdorp.

Great, until episode 9 was skipped.
I was enjoying this story, and looking forward to each new episode, but I cannot believe the duplicate episode issue (the episode titled 9 is just a repeat of episode 8) has not been fixed. I thought for sure this would be fixed before episode 10 was released but it wasn’t, so I have stopped listening. 😢

    Fix episode 9
Hello love the podcast but please fix episode 9, its just a replay of episode 8 right now.

    Repeat episode
I love the podcast. I just wanted to point out that when you try to hear episode nine it plays eight instead. Other than that I love the show and the way the story is told. I feel like I’m sitting in the room with EPD while they plot and scheme. Hopefully the mixup of the episodes get fixed soon so I know what happens next.

Please try to pronounce the names of people and places correctly
Loved this podcast, really I feel guilty to complain because of how much I enjoyed this but here’s some Feedback for the producers: I understand there is a difference between American and South African accents, but there is no excuse for the narrator to consistently mispronounce every single name, especially the names of the key players and key places. I do think this feels disrespectful to the people who contributed to not even attempt to get the pronunciation correct. Johannesburg starts with a J yet the narrator consistently pronounced it with a Y for example.

    Wow! What an incredible show!
I am blown away that I haven’t heard this story before. With all the twists and turns I would have thought this saga would be more well known. The story is woven so tensely, and I find myself thinking about each episode every week until the next one drops. It’s absolutely fascinating, and told in a way that doesn’t sensationalize the terrible evil it describes, or make the killers some kind of anti-hero like I think so many true crime stories can do. This is really a stand out in the genre, and I now I’m trying to dig up as much info I can on this. Hopefully they’ll turn this into a documentary or something. Check this one out!

    Episode 9 or 8
Why is episode 9 just a retelling of episode 8, just wait till you have new content to put up a new episode.

    Great podcast but…
Amazing podcast I can’t believe I’ve never heard this story. I look forward to every new episode which brings me to my “but…” your episode 9 is not new!!! It’s just episode 8 but you labeled it episode 9 😩😩 I need the new episode asap but on Apple and Spotify both episodes 8 and 9 are identical!

    Couldn’t get through it
Just too convoluted- but the narrators voice is awesome

    Crazy story
This is a very crazy story told so well. It is very gripping.

    Frustrating
Great story, good content. Incredibly difficult to understand Luke’s voice. I understand that it needed to be altered, but had to stop listening because I couldn’t understand what was being said.

    Something's missing
It's not bad but it's missing something for me:/ Maybe not enough backstory or character development/too many characters. Or flat story arc. The narrator often shares their personal feelings or observations as well, which doesn't help things. This could be a fascinating story but it fails to take off.

    Pretty dull
I couldn’t get past the passive-voiced writing. It’s was “Cecilia did this and then this, and maybe this”. They took anything interesting and super diluted it to fill a podcast.

    Pretends to be creepy.
    The background music, bro.

Fresh and so far so good
I am happy, for lack of a better word, that there is a story like this that takes place other than the US or EU or RU for that matter, that shows the diversity of cult like behavior and the overall similarity of religious following and need for belief. And the fragility of the human mind. Scary but well put together.

    Very addictive!!
    Can’t wait for episode 3!!!

    Couldn’t put down!
